Kidcut up & No Request

1. How long have you been a Dj, officially and unofficially?

been djing for 11 or so years... playing out in public for about 8 or 9. probably the longest I've done anything in my life..

2. Tell us about your top 3 favorite Dj’s and which influenced you the most?
awww geez. I hate lists... ive been influenced by so many djs over the years. I could give you a top 3 for every year I've been djing! Ive always been influenced by the people I work with most. so shouts to my No Request partners... Why B. Swan... John Swan. Steve Marxx. DJ DWood.

3. How do you feel about those cats out there claiming they can do what you do just because they have a Mac book and 10,000 songs in their playlist? Is it that easy these days?
can they though?? there will always be a place for DJs who can read a crowd right... and rock a party with hands on skills. no computer can do those things. and having too many songs can be just as bad as too few... the masses might be fooled for a short while. but quality always wins.

4. Will there be another skateboard/snowboard event (i.e. Board fest) with you Dj-ing in the future?
I just did a GREAT event called Log Jammin that was put on by Moda 3. DC Shoes. Redbull. and others... was a super good time and a very well run event. Shout out to Melissa Twist for being such a driving force behind it...

5. What is “No Request”, and why is it different from other groups?
No Request Sound System is a group of like-minded DJs who wanna bring something different to the table when it comes to music and party presentation. Its a bit more subtle and its not for everyone... but people who get it really do appreciate it and find value in it. We just celebrated our 5 year anniversary last year and hitting that mark really kind of illustrated to me that what we've built really does exist and that people care... at least a little. which is saying a lot in a city that can be rather apathetic at times...

6. Song to drink to:
ummm... depends on what I'm drinking. i think Pound That Beer by Mac Lethal is a great song to drink to.

7. If there was a kid out there with dreams of becoming a Dj, what would be good advice?
learn the history of your art and practice. practice. practice. so when its your time you can add something to that history. and dont bite... be you. do things that only you... as an individual would do.

8. Ok, have you ever tried to skateboard growing up? If so tell us about it?
I skated for years. most of my time involved falling a lot... but it never seemed to stop me from trying. I was never that good... but always enjoyed it. I still cruise around from time to time...

my first board was a skinny variflex board with a Hot 102 sticker on it. yeah. thats how i rolled in '88.

This or That

Bar or Club? club.

Chucks or Nikes? nikes.

Slow jams or Ass shake? shake.

...and shout out to Milwaukee and its awesome music scene!! our struggle is our best creative advantage. keep working hard!! peace to my RecordBreaker Fam!! NRS/RB!!! find more of my work at:

WHAT FRIENDS THINK ABOUT KIDCUT UP

Jessica Venus Nameste
kid cut up is a vital component to milwaukee's music scene. in fact, i have no doubt that within the next few years, he will become vital to a much more global scene as well. he is an amazingly creative dj, while he is also a technically superior one at the same time. his mixtapes and remixes are incredibly refreshing in that he has the keen ability to always give people something classic, loved and familiar yet at the same time, he is sharing some of the newest and up and coming songs and artists that no one has ever heard. and while he does really mean "no requests", that doesn't mean that he won't do what he can to play what the crowd is into. he can read a crowd and control the direction of the evening like none other. depending on which of his weekly nights he's spinning at or special event is going on, it may be one of the only times you'll hear real hip hop in this city.

yes, cut up is extremely talented. yes, he brings a new layer of freshness to milwaukee hip hop. yes, our city would not be the same if we didn't have the opportunity to see/hear him play. his contributions to the community, however, are far greater and deeper than his musical exploits...

kid cut up is a really good person. he is a dependable, fun and just a great person to have in your corner. he is generous and giving - always willing to offer advice, support and opportunities to those around him. unlike many people in the music industry, he actually shares his music, knowledge and expertize to other djs. he also will be the first to promote quality local artists or give constructive criticism when an artist isn't quite ready. he genuinely joys in other's success and gives opportunities to the driven, talented and hard working when others may be reluctant. he doesn't take sides when there's "beef" between crews, nor does he partake in spreading rumors around town. he has a strong, ethical character that is hard to come by in general, but even more so in the so-called "scene".

people should consider themselves lucky to hear his mixes. and honored to be his friend.

I remember Kid Cut Up back when he was doing his thing with the Fader Gremlins...this was back in like 2001... And to see how far he's grown and has continued to grow is inspiring. Plus he's one of the few heads that I know, that has been able to make a living doing his thing as a DJ. I think that's something every music maker strives to do, and that earns him mad RESPECT. - Melissa Czarnik
